In & Around Morland

St Lawrence's Church is the oldest structure in Cumbria still in daily use. It has a remarkable Saxon tower built in about 1050 with walls five feet thick in places. It is the only one in the North West of England. This tower had been built by Earl Siward of York. He chose Morland as it had been the centre of the ancient Celtic/British Kingdom of Rheged that had become the local principality when the Roman Legions had marched away.

The Mill Yard Cafe is a destination in itself. Mill Yard cafe is situated in the village square next to the Crown Inn and Appleby Brewery. Oak floors, terracotta walls and a snug with a wood burning stove create a wonderful atmosphere people travel far and wide to sample - as well as their delicious coffee and cakes. Herbs and sweet peas grow around the beautiful courtyard where you can relax in the summer months. The cafe doubles as a local food shop and sells gifts and paintings which adds to the wonderful sense of community. The menu offers delicious, freshly cooked food using local ingredients from homemade cakes and scones to fish cakes with Thai chilli sauce. Friday evening is Pizza Night at the cafe and the cafe is also open on Saturday evenings for meals. The menu includes Sea Bass, Rib Eye Steak & Mushroom Stroganoff.

The play area is located opposite the school and village hall on High Street.

The Tennis Court is alongside the village hall, the surface is tarmac, the court is marked for tennis and it has a net. It is available at a small charge for villagers and visitors who would like a game of tennis. Details are by the gate.

There are four circular walks starting from the square which go out into the surrounding countryside. Each has its own special features and all are easy walks of three to four miles. These walks are displayed on the notice boards in the square and at the village hall. Booklets describing the walks and providing directions are available from the Mill Yard Cafe.
